PIERRE – Aberdeen Central got its cross country season started in a major way during the Pierre Invitational on Friday.

The Golden Eagles won both individual races, and had five of the top six runners in the girls’ division, and the top two finishers in the boys’ race.

Allie Novstrup won the girls’ event in a time of 15:29.01. Evie Novstrup was runner-up, with teammates Allison Brenner, Khloe Cochran, and Grace Preszler finishing fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.

Tate DeVries won the boys’ race with a time of 13:00.05. Max Nelson was second.

“I talked to the kids on the bus about setting the tone today and they definitely did that. Allie and Tate both led their races from the gun and built off of those impressive starts,” said Central coach Eric Pedersen. “Both of them looked really smooth today and set the tone.”

The Golden Eagles received significant contributions from a variety of runners on the day.

“Max Nelson ran a smart race, too, and found himself a nice gap and was able to grow off that,” Pedersen said. “I was really pleased with Evie Novstrup today too coming in second place. She is running with a lot of confidence right now, which is great.”

Central now has a week off before competing at the Augie Twilight meet next Friday in Sioux Falls.

Pedersen was pleased with all of his runners both varsity and sub-varsity in the season-opening outing.

“Across the board, a great day,” Pedersen said, “a lot to build off of going into a week with a big meet like Twilight.”
