A new-look tournament will take centerstage this weekend at Moccasin Creek Country Club.

The traditional Pro-Am tournament is gone after 34 years and has been replaced by a tourney called The Am Presented by Western, which is set for Friday and Saturday.

“This year it’s 4-person teams with no pros involved,” said Isaac Morgan, head golf professional at Moccasin Creek.

Morgan said the change does not necessarily mean the annual Pro-Am is gone forever.

“We just parted ways with Dakota Tours for this year,” Morgan said. “It doesn’t mean in the future that we may or may not go back to it.”

The Am will not only have a bit of a different field, it will also feature a different format using the Stableford scoring system in which participants get a certain point value attached to birdies, eagles, etc. Divisions will include overall net and overall gross.

There will be an individual champion and also a team champion.

“There’s two tournaments happening at the same time, essentially,” Morgan said.

Morgan said that the response to the new tournament has been positive.

“Everyone is excited about it from the standpoint of it’s another opportunity to get together with friends and family that maybe you haven’t seen in a while,” Morgan said. “We have quite a few guests traveling in.”

Morgan said that one element from the Pro-Am will carry over to The Am.

“The one thing that we wanted to try and stay true to is each team has to have a member,” Morgan said, ensuring that there will be a local player in each foursome.

There are 43 teams in the field featuring 172 players. Morgan said that total number is a bit less than in Pro-Ams, but features more amateur golfers than past tournaments.

Golfers will tee off at 7 a.m. daily.

Morgan noted that there is a special derby set up for Saturday evening.

That event will feature the top 32 golfers in 16 two-person teams with a knockout style bracket. The derby will not determine the champions of the Am.
