If you’ve seen a new byline on the SD SportScene site recently it’s because we have a new addition this summer.

Cordell Vitense has joined us as an intern and will cover a variety of events. Here is his brief bio and initial thoughts on what he has covered so far:

My name is Cordell Vitense and I started my summer internship here at SD SportScene a few weeks ago. I graduated from Northwestern in Mellette in 2023 and now I will be going into my senior year at South Dakota State University this fall as a journalism major.

For the past two years, I have been working at The Collegian, which is SDSU’s newspaper, as a sportswriter and sports editor.

This is my first sports writing experience outside of SDSU, and in just a few weeks, I’ve already learned a lot and had a lot of fun writing about new things.

I got to cover three different state tournaments with track, softball and trapshooting. Track was probably the most challenging because of how busy it is with so many things going on. But every tournament had its own challenge. All of them were a lot of fun to cover, especially when you get to talk to all the different athletes who have their own unique outlooks and experiences.

I’m really looking forward to the rest of my summer, being able to cover more and more events and gain more and more experience.
