MITCHELL – A trio of Aberdeen Central track and field athletes captured first-place finishes at the Corn Palace Relays on Thursday.

Taryn Hermansen continues to have a stellar spring for the Golden Eagles. She won the shot put with a throw of 46-feet, 8-1/2 inches, a personal best mark and a throw that ranks among the top 20 in nation this year. It also broke her own Corn Palace Relays record set last season.

Meanwhile, teammate Mya Arampatzis set a new meet record in winning the 100-meter hurdles in a time of :14.98, breaking a record set by Mitchell’s Sarah Hoffman of :15.18 set in 1998.

Central’s Kyson Fayant won the 300-meter hurdles.

“The hurdlers came to play. … Every hurdler today shaved time,” said Central girls’ coach Jim Appl. “I’m so proud of that.”

Espynn Kuhfeld finished second in the girls’ 300 hurdles and lowered her season-best time by a couple of seconds.

The Golden Eagles also received a second place finish from Brecken Santjer in the pole vault, third places finishes from Paige Ewalt in the discus, and Regan Lust and Lucy Fritz in the high jump, and also the 400-meter relay team.

“All of our relays dropped mega time,” Appl said.

The coach was pleased with the way the Golden Eagles handled the elements on the day.

“It was 90 and hot and windy,” Appl said, “and our kids competed.”

Central boys’ coach Greg Murley was also happy with how the athletes dealt with the conditions.

“A lot of young ones kind of figuring out how to deal with the heat a little bit and the wind,” Murley said, “and kind of the expectations about how we compete during that time, and how we go about warming up and warming down.”

The Golden Eagles received second-place finishes from Carter Lust in the 200-meter dash, Tate DeVries in the 800-meter run, and Lincoln Stone in the javelin, plus the 400-meter relay. DeVries finished third in the 1,600, and Brenner Waldrop was third in both the discus and the javelin.

The meet was moved up from Saturday because of the weather forecast for the weekend.

“I think there’s a lot of us that feel like we spend our time just looking at the Weather Channel,” Murley said. “We have to do what’s best for the kids.”

Central competes at a meet in Brookings on Tuesday.
