EUREKA – Relay squads from Groton made their presence felt at the inaugural Bob Billotto Invitational track and field meet on Tuesday.

The Tigers won four of the five relays in the girls’ division and claimed three of the five relays in the boys’ division.

Aberdeen Christian won one of other boys’ relays, topping the field in the 1,600-meter relay with a team consisting of Dylan Hofer, Luke Kaiser, Eben Wurgler, and Joseph Richards.

“Really strong day for the boys. Rotated some boys through on the 4X1 and ran well,” said Christian coach Sam Bjorkman. “Joseph dropped more time in the mile. Boys put together a solid early season 4X4.”

Hofer finished second in the 100, Wurgler was second in the 400 and Kaiser was second in the 110-meter high hurdles and 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

Wurgler ran his fastest time in the 400.

“He’s a kid with talent and an attitude for speed endurance and has been working all off season on his top end speed,” Bjorkman said. “Awesome to see that come through in his best 400.”

Aberdeen Roncalli athletes won two events on the day and placed high in many others.

“We had a lot of good things happen today,” said Roncalli co-coach Mark Stone. “We are proud of their efforts and today we were able to see some results from the workouts and practice time in recent weeks.”

Austin Fisher won the high jump and Kadince Glynn topped the field in the 300 hurdles.

Stone pointed out personal best efforts from Christina Mitzel and Rylee Voeller in the discus, and Quinten Shelton in the long jump.

“Addi Cassady had a full day on the track (second in both the 1,600 and 3,200) and did well in the pole vault,” Stone said, “and Jean Anthony Thomas had a good start to his season in the shot.”
