BROOKINGS – It proved to be a memorable day for a pair of Aberdeen Central track and field athletes during the Brookings Alumni Meet on Tuesday.

Kyson Fayant broke the school record in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, and Brenner Waldrop set a new school standard in the javelin.

“We had a good day. … Obviously, the highlight of the day, we have two school records,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley.

Fayant clocked a time of :38.62 in the 300 hurdles, while Waldrop threw 170-feet, 5 inches in the javelin.

Waldrop finished second in the shot put. Central’s Jack Bertsch won the discus at 157-4, followed by Walrop in second and Eli Schauer in third.

“All three areas of our throws were pretty good today,” Murley said.

Evan Sichmeller won the pole vault at 13 feet, and Carter Lust had a big day in the sprints, winning the 100-meter (:11.04), 200-meter (:22.72) and running on the winning 400-meter relay team along with Bennett Eisenbeisz, Karson Borge, and Fayant.

“Carter Lust is really starting to run well for us and put some stuff together. … He had a really good 1 and 2, and our 4X1 had a really good day,” Murley said.

Central also won the 800-meter relay with members Noah Harrison, Luke Swanson, Preston Welke, and Jairon Batista.

Murley likes the chemistry of his athletes.

“Good group of kids. It’s kind of fun that all the kids are happy for them and it kind of shows what kind of character those guys have,” Murley said. “They put the time and the work into it, so it’s a good, good thing.”

The Golden Eagles also made a big impact in the girls’ division winning multiple events on the day.

“We really did well in the field events,” said Central girls’ coach Jim Appl.

Taryn Hermansen won the shot put with a throw of 46-4, Paige Ewalt won the discus at 114-6, and Morgan Griebel won the long jump at 16-8 1/2. Regan Lust was second in the high jump and Lucy Fritz was second in the triple jump.

On the track, Mya Arampatzis won the 100-meter hurdles (15.42), Lust won the 400-meter dash (1:04.39) and the 1,600-meter relay team shaved four seconds off its best time with a winning clocking of 4:14.12. Members were Griebel, Kylee Ewing, Espynn Kuhfeld, and Fritz.

“It was overall a really solid day for us performance-wise,” Appl said. “We got a lot accomplished today. … There was five teams here and we performed quite well.”

The Golden Eagles were able to take advantage of an ideal day for competition.

“We actually circled this meet for about a week now,” Appl said, “because this looked like the best day coming up.”

Central also received runner-up performances from Keyana Stillman in the 100-meter dash, Kuhfeld in the 300 hurdles, and the 400-meter and 3,200-meter relay squads.

“We ran well and competed hard,” Appl said.

The Golden Eagles will head to the Watoma Relays Friday in Watertown.
