BRANDON – Aberdeen Central continued its strong start to the season, as the Golden Eagles won their third tournament in convincing fashion on Friday.
Central captured the Brandon Invitational by 25 strokes over the rest of the field. While their team total of 321 was well off their school-record pace of 289 earlier in the week, it was still way more than enough to secure another team title.
“The score we had today is nothing to sneeze at,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “It’s a very good score.”
Olivia Braun won her third consecutive medalist honors with an even-par 71. Emma Dohrer was fourth with a 79, Kyley Wirebaugh was fifth with an 82, and Chloe Vikander was 10th with an 89.
“None of them really played exceptionally well today,” Zimmerman said. “They’ll admit that. … The good thing is we won by how many strokes we did considering we didn’t play our best golf today.”
Zimmerman said the greens played a big role on the day.
“I think once in a while the type of day it is and the golf course kind of dictates your score a little bit too, which was the case today,” Zimmerman said. “Greens were very fast today, something we haven’t been able to practice on and really get accustomed to.”
The greens forced the Golden Eagles to play more tentative that normal.
“I know we were familiar with that golf course from last year, but when you putt on greens the way we did today, you kind of get defensive and you kind of get gun-shy right away,” Zimmerman said. “They’re very fast and pretty soon you’re playing golf defensively and it becomes more difficult that way.”
Central heads to Pierre on Tuesday before hosting the Hub City Invitational on Thursday at Moccasin Creek Country Club.
