Birnbaum breaks NCAA record in 1,500

EUGENE, Ore. – Former Rapid City Stevens standout Simeon Birnbaum broke the all-time NCAA record in the 1,500-meter run on Saturday night. The University of Oregon runner covered the distance in a time of 3:31.69.

The previous record belonged to Liam Murphy of Villanova, who ran a 3:32.02 in 2025.

The world record is 3:26.0 and the American record is 3:27.40.

Birnbaum’s collegiate record time would have qualified for the finals at the 2024 Olympics.
