BROOKINGS – Defending state champions Kyson Fayant and Taryn Hermansen each recorded a win to lead strong performances by Aberdeen Central at the Ruth Marske Indoor track and field meet on Saturday.

Fayant won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in a time of :38.98. The time would have set the school record, but it won’t count because the meet was held indoors.

“Kyson had a good day. … He’s got more in him,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “He had two not so good hurdles at the end.”

Hermansen won the shot put with a throw of 43-feet, 1-inch.

“Of course, Taryn does what Taryn does,” said Central girls’ coach Jim Appl. “She goes out there and she kind of takes over the field when she gets there.”

The Golden Eagles had a variety of solid showings throughout the day.

Mya Arampatzis was second in the 100-meter hurdles, teammates Breckan Santjer and Jaidyn Forsyth tied for third in the pole vault, and Allison Brenner was fourth in the 1,600-meter run.

“The biggest thing for our kids is they think, the ones who were at the state meet last year, they should be right where they left off,” Appl said. “You’re not going to be there in March. We want to look where we were last March, and if we’re ahead of where we were last March, then we’re good.”

On the boys’ side Central’s Carter Lust was third in the 100-meter dash and also ran on the 400-meter relay team which finished fourth. Other members of the squad are Bennett Eisenbeisz, Karson Borge, and Caden Forred.

“That’s a crew that was pretty disappointed at state last year,” Murley said, noting the squad was running in fourth place before an injury derailed the finish. “That group of kids really has a drive to get better.”

Central had a number of individuals that finished in the top 10 on the day.

“I was really happy with the way we competed and performed,” Murley said.

Northwestern junior Ty Boekelheide finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 43-4 1/4.

It marked the first meet of the season for the Golden Eagles and a good starting point for the upcoming season.

“Kids always have these high, lofty expectations and goals they want, but we have to be realistic when we’re approaching it,” Appl said. “For the most part, I was quite pleased with what we accomplished today.”

Central will have some JV kids competing at an indoor meet Tuesday at the Barnett Central.

The varsity is off until after Easter, when the Golden Eagles will be at Pierre on Tuesday, April 7, and at Huron on Friday, April 9.
