MITCHELL – The Aberdeen Central girls’ wrestling program qualified nine individuals for the Class A state wrestling tournament while capturing the team title at the Region 3 tournament Friday night.

Powered by five individual champions, the Golden Eagles bested runner-up Pierre by 35 points in the team race. Central notched 228 points to Pierre’s 193.

“There’s always a few things that slip through,” said Central coach Jake Flakus. “But the girls wrestled very well today.”

Central got individual championship efforts from Madison Little (110 pounds), Jasmine Maas (115), Rakyrah Wallace (140), Lin Paw Jone (155) and Lilly Nelson (170). Allison Neitzel (145), and Meleane Mounga (190) each reached the championship match of their respective weight classes, claiming the runner-up spot.

Flakus pointed out Wallace’s championship run as one of the highlights for his squad.

“She beat a girl who was No. 2 in the state,” Flakus said. “Rakyrah hadn’t beaten her yet, and took her down with seconds left in the match to win.”

Wallace’s win was a 3-2 decision over Kezrey Benning of Pierre.

Other Golden Eagle qualifiers included Paisley Stewart (100) and Imani Pippens (130). The nine qualifiers matches Central’s total from last season, the first where region tournament placings were used to determine qualifications.

“That’s consistent for us,” Flakus said. “I think six of the nine have either been to or placed in the state tournament before. That experience is going to be key. … Just proud of the way the girls wrestled. They wrestled hard all day and they deserved that title.”

The Class A state tournament is slated for Feb. 26-28 in Sioux Falls.
