Aberdeen Central grabbed victories in the final six weight classes on the way to a 48-21 Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ wrestling victory over Huron Tuesday night at Golden Eagles Arena.

Huron led 21-18 before Central scored the final 30 points to secure the win on Senior Night.

The evening started with a thrilling win by Central’s Paisley Stewart at 100 pounds. The seventh grader trailed 4-0 after the second period before scoring a takedown and a three-point near fall in the third period for a 6-4 victory.

“I started shooting on her,” Stewart said on how she turned the match in her favor. “In the first period and the second period, I wouldn’t try shooting.”

Once Stewart took a shot, she came to the realization that she had what it would take to win the match.

“I was too scared to shoot,” Stewart said, “and then when I first shot, I was like ‘Oh yeah, I can shoot on this girl and get some points and take her down.’”

Stewart’s dramatic comeback drew the praise of Central coach Jake Flakus.

“I was kind of shaking my head, kind of like man, what’s going to happen here? I didn’t think things were going to go our way,” Flakus said. “Paisley did what she’s kind of done all year. She’s found a way to stay in tight matches and it showed right there. As long as there’s time left on the clock, you can win and that’s exactly what she did.”

Flakus said that the first-year varsity member had the right attitude and never gave up.

“You got be a stingy and tell yourself you’re never out of a match,” Flakus said. “Some girls when they get down in points, they kind of hang their head and start to quit, but that’s a great example if you stay in the match, good things will happen.”

Central also received pins from Madison LIttle, Rakyrah Wallace, and Lilly Nelson in addition to a decision from Arianna Goldade.

The Golden Eagles also struggled a bit to finish off a match or two.

“I think we need to build on finding a way to win the close matches. … We need to find a way to wrestle tough the whole match,” Flakus said.

Central honored its seniors on their special night.

Stewart said they have made a big impact on her.

“They’ve been very supportive on the sideline,” she said, “and they’ll get you pumped up before your match.”
