HERREID – Herreid-Selby Area and Aberdeen Christian had battled to even terms late in the third set before the Wolverines took control.

The hosts came up big down the stretch on the way to a 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17 non-conference victory Thursday night.

The score was tied at 20-20 in the pivotal third set before HSA scored four unanswered points, eventually grabbed the set and then finished off the match in the fourth.

“It was very tight, back and forth, through all four sets,” said Wolverines coach Maria Sandmeier. “Honestly, both sides were pretty scrappy. There were lots of competitive rallies with some hustle plays.”

In the end, Herreid-Selby Area made enough plays to win its fourth straight match to start the season.

“On both sides it honestly came down to who made less errors,” Sandmeier said. “We had long rallies and tons of big swings, but it took a couple well-placed balls to get our offense to capitalize on some plays. A credit to Aberdeen Christian. They are hard to score on.”

Jordyn Rossow had 14 kills to lead the Wolverines. Breanna Jochim topped the squad with three aces.

The Knights, 1-2 on the season, have another road match on Tuesday against Langford Area, before playing at unbeaten North Central on Thursday.
