MADISON – Aberdeen Roncalli won its ninth Region 1A golf team championship in the past 10 years on Monday, topping the field by 20 strokes.
The Cavaliers, who placed five members among the top eight finishers had a team total of 325. Roncalli has won every region team crown in the past decade except for two years ago when Groton was the champion.
Milbank’s Jonathan DeBoer was the individual champion for the second time in three years. DeBoer, who won the region title two years ago before a runner-up finish last season, shot a 75 to edge Roncalli’s Lucas Daggett by one stroke for the individual championship.
“Happy for Lucas today,” said Roncalli coach Jon Murdy. “It was battle for all 18 holes.”
Roncalli’s Harper Schnabel tied for fourth, while Matthew Gerlach was sixth, Jesse Hernandez was seventh, and Finn Anderson was eighth.
“With the bad starts for Finn and Harper, they were able to play well on the back nine,” Murdy said. “Matthew Gerlach played very well. I’m happy to see the hard work Gerlach and Lucas have been putting in has been playing off for them. Now, we will see how the boys will play next week at state.”
The Cavaliers will take a week prepare for next week’s State A Tournament Monday and Tuesday at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion.
“You never know what could happen at state,” Murdy said. “Just need to bring our A game.”
