GROTON – Addison Cassady set a new school record in winning the girls’ individual championship, helping to power Aberdeen Roncalli to the girls’ team title as well during the Groton Invitational Cross Country Meet on Monday.
“Our girls ran well, four in the top 10, which is nice” said Roncalli coach Casey Steele. “It’s a small field, but most impressive today is our times are coming down. Addison Cassady from the mile mark just ran away from everybody over the next two miles. She set a new school record running 19:29 and won by over a minute, so an impressive day for her, racing strong all by herself.”
Roncalli also received a fifth place finish from Hazel Kannegieter, while Taylor McComsey was eighth, and Harper Kline was ninth.
“The others girls bunching it up like that, I think is saying good things for us heading into our conference, and regional meet,” Steele said.
Aidan Thurber of Ellendale, N.D., won the boys’ race to help lead the Cardinals to the team title. Titus Kippley of Frederick finished second, and Joseph Richards of Aberdeen Christian took fifth.
Roncalli was led by Ben Keller in 11th, and Ezra Steele in 14th.
“Our boys ran more competitively than they have in the past, which was really nice” Steele said, “we finished third overall. The young boys are training hard and reaping the benefits of training hard as the times are lowering.”
Christian heads to Sisseton for a meet on Thursday, before competing in the Lake Region Conference meet next Wednesday a.t Ipswich
Roncalli is off until competing in the Northeast Conference meet next Thursday at Webster.
