Golden Eagles wrap up weekend with two tennis wins

BROOKINGS – Using a different lineup, Aberdeen Central produced two more tennis victories on Saturday to go 4-1 on the weekend. The Golden Eagles defeated Huron 8-1, and doubled up Watertown 6-3.

With flight two singles player Sarah Knie out of the lineup, Central coach John Vogel came up with a last-minute idea. Instead of playing a sub at that position, he inserted third flight singles player Chloe Ladner into that position.

“I don’t’ know if Chloe was happy with me,” Vogel said. “Two minutes before we were going to go play, I said ‘Hey Chloe, by the way you’re going to play two right now.'”

Ladner proved to be up to the challenge pulling out a 7-3 tiebreaker victory.

“That was a weird momentum match, because she was up 3-0, and then she was down 4-7,” Vogel said. “And she went up to get it to a breaker. … It ended up being a great match.”

That singles match likely impacted another match, because Ladner faced the same opponent in her top flight doubles match with Avery Tennant.

“That worked out well for us. And then it probably got Chloe ready for the one dubs,” Vogel said, “because she got to play against that girl in singles, so she already knew her style.”

Tennant and Ladner then produced another tiebreaker victory by a 7-3 margin, that capped off the day for the Golden Eagles.

“It’s always nice winning the last match,” Vogel said, “especially when it’s a tiebreak.”

While Penelope Vogel filled in for Knie and won a pair of doubles matches with Estelle Riggs, Coach Vogel said the team missed having Knie.

“Kudos for Penelope and Estelle playing well together,” he said, “but it wasn’t the same.”

Central is back in action next Saturday facing Brandon Valley and Mitchell at Mitchell.
