A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of May 7-13:
Last year on May 13, 2022: Amazingly, small Day County in South Dakota now has its second world champion in mixed martial arts. Logan “Storm” Storley won a split-decision over Michael “Venom” Page to earn the interim Bellator Welterweight title in London in the feature bout at the Bellator 281 event. On his rural Roslyn farm, Webster High School graduate Storley (now 29) growing up could see the silos a couple of miles away on his neighbor’s farm, Brock Lesnar (now 44). Lesnar was an MMA world champ as well, as he won the UFC heavyweight title in 2008. Like Storley, Lesnar is a Webster graduate who was an All-
American at the University of Minnesota. Storley is now 14-1 while London native Page fell to 20-2. Storley’s only loss is to Yaroslav Amosov, who vacated his title to fight for his home country Ukraine in its war against Russia.
10 years ago on May 11, 2013: The Greater Dakota Conference track meet marked the final athletic event of the 16-year-old conference that is disbanding.
20 years ago on May 13, 2003: Among the 14 South Dakota college athletes who qualified for the NCAA DII nationals May 22-24 in Edwardsville, IL, are decathlete Eric Longhenry of NSU; distance runner Brad Lowery of Pierre/SDSU; and pole vaulter Sam Pribyl of Webster/USD.
30 years ago on May 8, 1993: Robb White of Aberdeen Central and USD has signed to play with the Sacramento Gold Miners, the first U.S. franchise in the Canadian Football League.
40 years ago on May 13, 1983: Jason Uttermark won four firsts (100 meters, 200 meters, 800 relay and medley relay) to lead the Aberdeen Central boys to the ESD track title in Brookings. The Golden Eagles scored 69 points while Watertown was second with 62.
50 years ago on May 13, 1973: Aberdeen Central and NSU graduate Mel Klein has been appointed
as acting athletic director at Augustana after Vikings’ AD Ade Sponberg resigned to take the AD job at NDSU. Klein will continue in his role as head men’s basketball coach as well.
