A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 30-May 6:

Last year on May 3, 2022: A trio of Boekelheides from Northwestern had a big day during the Dwight Kinney Invitational track meet in Estelline. Jessica Boekelheide won the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes, while her sister Ella won the 800 and 1,600 meter runs. Both girls ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay squad. Their cousin, Ethan Boekelheide, won the 400-meter dash and was also a member on the first-place 3,200-meter relay squad.

10 years ago on May 3, 2013: Ipswich eighth-grader Macy Heinz won the invitation-only girls’ 800 meters in 2:16.91 at the Howard Wood Relays, topping by more than two seconds a field that included two former State AA champions. Also, SDSU senior thrower Brooke Garner of Rapid City Stevens won her 30th career Howard Wood Relays event.

20 years ago on May 3, 2003: Aberdeen Central graduate Tonia Burgard anchored Augustana to a win in the Howard Wood Relays 400-meter relay in a meet record time. Burgard was participating in her 10th Howard Wood Relays. Micah Arnold of NSU was the Relays’ men’s 200-meter champion.

30 years ago on May 1, 1993: Jaime Pauli of Milbank won the 1,600 meters at the Howard Wood Relays in a race that featured runners from all classes.

40 years ago on May 6, 1983: John Carrels, Steve Hinds, Scott Novak and Chad Anderson of NSU all advanced into the quarterfinals of the NAIA District 12 Men’s Tennis Tournament in Aberdeen. The next day, NSU would win the team title and Carrels won the singles title 6-1, 6-1 over teammate Novak. Carrels and Anderson also won the doubles title over teammates Novak and Hinds 6-3, 6-3.

50 years ago on May 5, 1973: Three South Dakotans were among the top five finishers in the college discus at the Howard Wood Relays. Paul Okerstrom of Mankato State was first with his throw of 164-9 while Aberdeen native George Amundson of Iowa State was third; Milbank native Jack Hurley of NSU was fourth; and Chancellor native Ron Kortmeyer of SDSU was fifth.
