Athletes excel during initial indoor meet

One broke a nearly 50-year-old school record, while another experienced immediate success in a new event during the Northern State Invitational indoor track and field meet Tuesday at the Barnett Center.

As snow came down at a steady pace outdoors, local athletes were getting warmed up for the upcoming season indoors.

Aberdeen Roncalli’s Jayden Munroe had a day to remember leaping farther than any other athlete in school history in the triple jump. Munroe’s distance of 43-feet, 7 and one quarter-inches topped the previous distance of 43-5 set by Jim Sayler in 1975.

“I was pretty proud of myself, especially like the first meet of the year,” Munroe said. “So it felt really good.”

Munroe thought he had a good mark, but wasn’t sure how far it was. The distance was announced in meters.

“I had no idea until they told us,” Munroe said. “My coach converted it to feet and we realized from there it was a school record.”

Munroe, who also won the long jump, said the key in triple jumping is figuring out the correct strides.

“It’s a lot of technique,” Munroe said. “You get so much momentum it’s so hard to get those steps down, but after a while I got it down pretty well.”

Ciara Frank of Aberdeen Central is known for her jumping ability. While her specialties are the high jump and long jump, Frank found instant success in her first ever hurdles race during the meet, topping the field in the 55-meter hurdles.

“It went really well,” Frank said. “I was really nervous.”

Having a background in jumping helps, but Frank said there is definitely a difference when it comes to hurdling.

“Hurdles you don’t really have to jump up, you jump out,” Frank said.

She plans to add the hurdles to her repertoire this spring.

“There’s definitely a lot of room for improvement,” Frank said. “I just have to work on staying low to the hurdle and not jumping right over it.”

Central’s Ethan Fergel got his season off to a flying start by winning the pole vault.

The senior, who is bound for West Point next fall, was also a member of the Cougars hockey team. He said vaulting and hockey share something in common.

“I wouldn’t say physically, but mentally, to not get in your head is a huge part of it. For example, my whole warmup, I was risking death the entire time I was warming up,” Fergel said. “Nothing was working, but then the second the bar went up, I let everything leave my mind and I just relaxed and it all worked. Hockey is a similar thing. Once one person starts complaining, it brings the whole team down. You don’t score goals.”

Fergel, who hopes to be a part of Army’s track and field squad, said he’s been vaulting for a while.

“I went out for middle school track,” Fergel said, “and I chose the most dangerous event.”

Brayden Sumption was among the first and last winners of the meet on Tuesday. The Frederick junior won the high jump to start the meet and then ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay team to conclude it.

Sumption said he enjoys relays better than individual events. Last year Frederick won the State B championship in the 4X4.

“We always push each other,” Sumption said. “Everyone works as hard as they can.”

Sumption was also second to teammate Johnathan Bretsch in the 400-meter dash.

Sumption was happy to be competing indoors and out of the elements.

“It’s a lot better than practice. Practice is cold,” Sumption said. “The short track messes with you, but running is running.”

While the season is just getting started, athletes thrive on competition and that was evident in the final girls’ event of the meet. Roncalli’s Paige Schmidt finished off the 1,600-meter relay with a strong anchor leg vaulting the Cavaliers into a second place finish.

When asked when she knew she had a chance, Schmidt responded, “Not until about a lap left. Then I thought I could do it. Before that I thought I was going to get last.”

The junior said the shorter indoor track alters strategy a bit.

“I normally start speeding up with like 200 left,” Schmidt said, “but in here that’s over a lap left, which is very different.”

Schmidt, who finished eighth in the 800-meter run, also prefers relays over individual events.

“You get a team and you all work together so when you win it’s like twice as much fun,” Schmidt said, “because it’s four people winning instead of just one.”

Central had two other girls win multiple events, Regan Lust in the 55-meter dash and the high jump, and Juna Ramey in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs.

Each of the Aberdeen coaches was pleased with the performances of their athletes.

“It was fun just to be able to get out there and compete,” said Roncalli coach Brady Lesnar, “and see the kids in their new uni’s.”

Of course, he pointed to the memorable effort of Munroe in the triple jump.

“We weren’t sure if we even wanted him to start jumping yet,” Lesnar said. “Basketball just got done.”

The majority of Central’s varsity did not compete, but the Golden Eagles still had a solid day.

“Our kids got out and competed and raced hard, and found some kids in different colored uniforms to run against,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “That was kind of the goal today, get some kids some races.”

It was the same thing on the girls’ side.

“We didn’t want to bring a lot of our varsity kids,” said Central girls’ coach Jim Appl, “but we brought a few who did some stuff over the winter and were ahead of pace.”

Appl credited the coaching staff for the performances of those individuals who excelled during the meet.

He said he wasn’t overly concerned about the results of the season-opening meet.

“I told the kids, whether they had a great day or a bad day, it’s March 21,” Appl said. “It doesn’t matter. All we’re doing is building until in May.”
