Athletes excel in unique combinations

Track and field athletes experienced success in a wide variety of combinations Thursday at the final indoor meet of the season at the Barnett Center.

Josh McQuarie of Ipswich won the high jump and the 55-meter hurdles and also placed in the 200-meter dash. When asked about the unique combination, he said it came from Ipswich coach Todd Thorson.

“It all starts with Coach Thorson. He makes us try different things to see what we’re good at and we just run with it then,” McQuarie said.

While the senior had success in all three events on the day, there was no denying what his favorite was.

“Hurdles for sure. I enjoy that,” McQuarie said. “I’m not a big open running guy. I do not like that.”

The 55-meter hurdles is not near as much of a challenge as the 110-meter high hurdles or the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, accoring to McQuarie.

“It’s all about endurance for the 110s. This is just a normal sprint,” McQuarie said of the 55s. “The 110s you start getting tired at the end there.”

And don’t even bring up the 300 hurdles.

“Those are not fun,” McQaurie said. “I’ll tell you that.”

So why does he do it?

“Coach Thorson man, he’s trying to push us to be our best,” McQuarie said. “If you’re not going forward, you’re going backwards.”

McQuarie wasn’t the only athlete who had success in a unique pairing of events during the meet.

Webster’s Drew Reetz won the pole vault and also the 800-meter run.

“Not many people would think about that,” Reetz said of the combination of the two events, “but I guess I’ll have to be the first.”

The sophomore who owns seventh and eight-grade records in the 800, prefers the pole vault over running.

“Pole vault is just lot of fun. I get to go super high,” he said. “It’s really fun, I think.”

Reetz said running the 800 indoors is not the same as running it outdoors.

“It’s a lot different. There’s many more laps,” Reetz said.

The air quality is also a bit different.

“It’s so dry in here,” Reetz said. ” You kind of just have to push through that, not think about that; just think about finishing.”

Lanie Awender of Oakes, N.D., had no problem with finishing, capturing both the 55-meter and 200-meter dashes.

The defending North Dakota State B champion in both the 100 and 200, said starts are crucial in sprint races.

“I was really focusing on my blocks and good starts,” Awender said. “The starts are always the most important.”

Oddly enough, Awender wasn’t pleased with her start in the 55, but still won the race anyway.

“All the training I’ve done the past month really helped me, because the 55 dash is such a short race,” Awender said. “If you mess up once, it’s hard to come back.”

Vanessa Klein of Tri-State also had a big day. The senior from Rosholt won the 400-meter dash, was fifth in the 55-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash.

Klein said the 400 is a tough race.

“I know what it takes and what speed you have to be at for the entire thing,” she said. “You have to be like dead sprinting.”

That particular race brings out a mix of emotions.

“That’s my best one, but it’s also a love-hate relationship, because it’s a little death,” she said, “but that’s why I like it.”
