Northern falls in penalty kicks to Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. – The Northern State soccer team went the distance and then some before eventually coming up just short against Minnesota State in the semifinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon.

After a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation, the teams battled through a pair of scoreless overtimes before going to penalty kicks, where the Mavericks edged NSU 9-8.

Jaylee Hofer scored in the 22nd minute for the Wolves and the contest was tied 1-1 at the half. Minnesota State then opened a two-goal lead early in the second half before Northern battled back to force overtime on a goal from Lauren Youngquist, and another from Sarah Helderop in the 85th minute.

After the two overtimes, there were 13 rounds of a penalty kick shootout where the Mavericks prevailed, stopping Northern’s final attempt.

The Wolves, 11-4-4, will now wait to see if they will get a bid to the national tournament. They were sixth in the latest Central Region rankings. The selection show will take place on Monday evening.
