A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 25-31, 2026:
Last year on Oct. 25, 2025: Northwestern senior Ella Boekelheide won her third State B cross country title (2025, 2024 and 2021). She was the state runner-up in 2022 and 2023, and finished sixth as a seventh-grader in 2020. Ipswich nipped Northwestern for the team title, with the Tigers’ Isabella Galbraith and Jayla Stiles finishing fourth and fifth.
10 years ago on Oct. 29, 2016: West River broadcasting legend Bob Lakowski has died at age 73.
20 years ago on Oct. 28, 2006: SDSU senior Becka Mansheim of Brookings won the NCAA DI Independents Championship in cross country. The Jacks also won the team title. In the men’s division, SDSU finished third led by a fifth-place finish by former Britton-Hecla standout Zach Frohling.
30 years ago on Oct. 25, 1996: Collin Docter and Andy Johnson combined for almost 350 yards rushing and five touchdowns to pace Britton (10-0) past Frederick-Hecla 36-24 in the Class 9A football playoffs.
40 years ago on Oct. 25, 1986: The Redfield girls nipped Webster 51-49. Darcy Levtzow scored 20 for the Pheasants and Amy Spiering scored 16 for the Bearcats.
50 years ago on Oct. 30, 1976: This winter, former Rapid City Stevens multi-sport standout Dave Collins is coaching a high school junior varsity boys’ basketball team in Anaheim (CA). Last summer, Collins hit .263 and stole 32 bases for the MLB team the California Angels.
