RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central won its final final tennis match of the season to put a cap on the year during the Class AA State Tournament on Friday.

The Golden Eagles received a consolation championship at third flight doubles and finished sixth in team points. Rapid City Stevens edged Sioux Falls Lincoln for the team title.

The team of Jovee Waldo and Raylee Zimmer won a pair of matches to end up in ninth place at flight three doubles.

“They had a disappointing day (Thursday),” said Central coach John Vogel, “but thanks to them is why I think we held on to sixth.”

The squad pulled off a big comeback to record a tie-break victory over Pierre to reach the consolation final.

“They were down 1-7, playing about as bad as you can play, and then totally flipped it,” Vogel said.

Vogel said the match turned quickly.

“The Pierre girls just started playing bad,” Vogel said, “and then all of a sudden our girls picked it up.”

Central’s other win on the day came from Sarah Knie in consolation action at top flight singles.

“Sarah finally beat Katie Morgan from Mitchell this year,” Vogel said. “She was 0-2 against her earlier, and today she just dominated her, so it was great to see.”

Central’s lone appearance on the podium came from Estelle Riggs, who finished fourth at second flight singles.

The Golden Eagles will lose one senior, Mady Holman, from their starting lineup.

Vogel was pleased with the team’s sixth-place finish.

“I was glad we held on to sixth,” Vogel said. “They played well this season and sixth is really good. … It’s a good year when you finish sixth in AA.”
