RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Roncalli advanced a doubles team to the state championship match, and two singles players to the semifinals during the first day of the Class A State Tennis Tournament on Monday.

The Cavaliers are fifth in the team points, one spot ahead of Milbank, which has one singles player in the semifinals.

“I would say based upon the fact that we only won two opening round singles matches, we are beyond fortunate to be in fifth place currently,” said Roncalli coach Ryan Bohle.

The Cavaliers advanced Sydney Bohle at second flight singles and Abigail Andersen at fifth singles to the semifinals.

“Abigail and Sydney kind of did today what they did all year in singles,” Coach Bohle said. “Abigail went out and dominated in flight five, and Sydney gutted out a win in a dogfight in flight two.”

The second flight doubles squad of Gianna Cihak and Molleigh Hofer advance to the championship match, including a tough 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win in the semifinals.

“Those two girls play so well together and man we are proud of the way they performed today,” Bohle said.

Roncalli still has five players left in singles and another doubles team that will play for third place today.

“There are still plenty of points left on the board,” Bohle said.

Milbank’s Jenna Korstjens will play in the semifinals at first flight singles.

Roncalli will look to stay in the top five when action resumes today.

“Our goal all year has been to be in that top five,” Bohle said, “and after digging ourselves into a bit of a whole on Monday, that goal is still in front of us Tuesday.”
