CLARK – Aberdeen Roncalli claimed four of the top eight spots on the way to winning the girls’ championship at the Clark-Willow Lake Invitational Cross Country Meet on Thursday afternoon.
Addison Cassady finished runner-up, with teammates Hazel Kannegieter, Taylor McComsey, and Hannah Eskro taking fourth, fifth, and eighth, respectively.
“I really like our team approach of getting out a bit quicker and then settling into our pace,” said Roncalli coach Casey Steele. “It was a cool, misty day for racing.”
The Cavaliers were competing on short rest, having run in Clear Lake on Monday.
“After racing in Deuel on Monday, it is a tough turn around to race again on Thursday,” Steele said. “Our girls are developing grit as competitors.”
The Roncalli boys finished fourth in team points lead by Ben Weigel in eighth, and Cole Feickert in 19th.
“We saw some conference and region teams that we haven’t seen in a while, so it was good to see where we were at on the same course,” said Roncalli coach Taylor Thorson. “The boys did well in the elements.”
Thorson said he is seeing improvement in the boys as a team as the season progresses.
“Our spread 1 through 4 is getting closer and closer,” Thorson said, “which is helping our team score tremendously.”
Aberdeen Christian had two runners in the top 10 in the boys’ race. Joseph Richards finished sixth, and Andrew Schwab took ninth. Clara Herreid was 18th in the girls race for the Knights.
Jackson Wolter of Sanborn Central-Woonsocket won the boys’ race, and Sierra Keller of Florence-Henry won the girls’ race.
Both Roncalli and Christian will be competing at the Steve Grode Memorial Meet on Monday in Groton.
