A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 19-25, 2026:

Last year on July 21, 2025: Aberdeen native and University of Nebraska swimmer Gena Jorgenson earned a silver medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the World University Games in Germany. She swam a lifetime best 16:15.44 while Team USA teammate Kate Hurst (Texas) won the event in 16:15.40. Jorgenson will be a senior for the Cornhuskers this fall where she is a two-time All-American and holds a multitude of school records.

10 years ago on July 23, 2016: The Sioux Falls Storm defeated Spokane 55-34 to win their sixth consecutive Indoor Football League title.

20 years ago on July 19, 2006: The Sioux Falls Canaries recently used 83-year-old Jim Eriotes as a hitter to break the record for the oldest person to play in a professional baseball game. He struck out. Eriotes had last played in a minor league game in 1948 for the Miami Owls.

30 years ago on July 19, 1996: Three former high school coaches will be inducted into the South Dakota Football Coaches Hall of Fame during the upcoming All-Star football game in Aberdeen. Honorees are Harvey Naasz of Winner, the late Joe Quintal of Mitchell and Rollie Greeno of Jamestown.

40 years ago on July 25, 1986: Milbank native Jack Price died of a heart attack at age 42. He was one of the state’s premiere athletes as an all-state football player and a record-holding and state champion shot putter as well as a standout on the basketball court and baseball field. He later was a starting offensive lineman for the Iowa Hawkeyes. In the fall of 1960, he and his Milbank football teammates were looking for its 22nd win in a row against Luverne, a Minnesota neighbor that had lost only twice in the last four seasons. Milbank won 28-18 with Price scoring three touchdowns and four extra points.

50 years ago on July 25, 1976: Miami Dolphins owner Joe Robbie told Argus Leader sports editor John Egan that he was a sports reporter for his hometown newspaper in Sisseton when he was in his teens.
