Redfield built a six-run lead and then held off a late rally to claim a consolation round victory in the Class B State Softball Tournament at Players Softball Complex on Friday.

Freeman-Marion-Freeman Academy, Beresford and Sioux Valley also grabbed victories on the day.

Redfield turned back Florence-Henry 7-6 in a rematch of game during the regular season that F-H won. The victory served as revenge for the Pheasants for an opening-round setback in the tourney as well as that setback to the Falcons.

“Coming off of (Thursday), we really wanted to make up for that,” said Redfield senior Kinley Smith. “We played Florence-Henry during the season and we lost to them. So this was like our comeback from (Thursday) and our comeback from the game during the season. Everyone was fired up.”

Smith played a key role in the victory in several different ways. She started the scoring in the fourth inning, laying down a bunt that produced a run and landed her on third base when the Falcons committed an error on the play.

“I actually read the call wrong,” Smith said. “I wasn’t suppose to bunt, but it worked out, and somehow we got a score in and I got over to third.”

Smith drove in a run with a double in the top of the sixth, and then in the bottom half of the inning gunned down a runner at the plate after catching a fly ball in right field.

“I could hear my teammates as it was in the air, ‘Go 4’ so I was preparing myself for that,” Smith said. “But then as it was in the air, I was like oh my gosh I better actually get that, and then it landed in my glove and it worked.”

Smith also drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. At the time it gave the Pheasants a six-run lead. It turned out Redfield needed every one of those three runs it scored in that inning, because Florence-Henry scored five times in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on base when the final out was recorded.

Ella-Rude Peterson had three hits to lead the Pheasants.

Ashlynn Vavruska, Kaylee Vavruska and Alayna Caufield each had two hits for the Falcons.

Florence-Henry will face Avon for seventh place at 10 this morning. Redfield takes on Freeman-Marion-Freeman Academy for fifth at noon.

“It’s amazing knowing that you’re going to go up in the placings now, too, going for fifth and sixth, going for the consolation champions,” Smith said. “After (Thursday) we really wanted go to 2-1 on the rest of the tournament, so we’re really aiming for that fifth.”
