SIOUX FALLS – A pair of Aberdeen Central wrestlers will vie for state titles, while eight total Golden Eagles will earn state placer medals after the second day of the Class A state tournament Friday.

Grayden Timm (175 pounds) and Owen Ward (190) each won their semifinals match in convincing fashion, spurring the Golden Eagles to big wins in the consolation rounds, as well.

“They’ve been having a dominant tournament,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden of Timm and Ward. “They went out there in the semifinal matches and Grayden got a major and Owen followed it up with a pin. That got everything sparked for that last round (of consolation semifinals) we were building into and the bonus points just kept coming.”

Central remained in fourth place in team points after Friday’s action. Sturgis retained a commanding hold on the top spot.

Bowden said he liked the way his team responded after Thursday’s matches in which some calls didn’t fall in Central’s favor.

“It’s a hard thing to come back from a loss,” Bowden noted. “It’s pretty easy to go into a hole and start thinking negative and once you start doing that it kind of spirals. But all these guys came back. You can look at every one of them. … Jackson Dargatz lost first round and now he’s in for third and fourth. That’s a long way back. Ridley Waldo losing in the semifinal and having to wrestle again a half hour, 45 minutes later to get into third and fourth. These guys are very tough and very resilient.“

In addition to Ward and Timm, Central will have four wrestlers competing for third place in Esten Foss (120), Mason Backous (126), Dargatz (132) and Waldo (157). Will Allen (138) and Porter Lozenski (150) will both wrestle for seventh.

That group includes Kayden Tchida of Sisseton at 113, Cash Edgar of Faulkton at 120, Talon Ping of Miller-Highmore-Harrold at 132, Jacksen Carter of Wessington Springs-Woonsocket-Wolsey-Wessington at 138, Haeden Jorgenson of Webster, and Chase Hurd of Miller-Highmore-Harrold at 144, Bryce Hawkinson of Britton-Hecla at 150, Holden Hawkins of Sisseton at 175, and Gavin Englund of Groton at 285.
