BRANDON – Three Aberdeen Central wrestlers brought home titles at the Dan Pansch Invitational Saturday, leading the Golden Eagles to the team title in the 11-team tournament.
Central coach noted that the relatively smaller field was a bit of a change for his squad, but did not detract from the Golden Eagles’ victory.
“It’s a smaller tournament, which is good,” Bowden said. “Not much of a meat grinder like other tournaments were, but the quality of competition was still there. There were still some really high-level kids, high-ranked kids at that tournament, and we were able to place 12 guys in the top four, and six of those guys were finalists.”
Will Allen won the 138-pound division, while Ridley Waldo pinned his way into the championship match at 157 pounds, where he won by a 9-4 decision. Owen Ward won all three of his matches at 190 pounds to win that division.
“Ridley and Owen are two guys that we look to for leadership and those guys continue to go out and do what they’re supposed to do and lead the team and go score bonus points,” Bowden said. “Then Will Allen, he’s been getting better with mat time and experience.”
Jackson Dargatz (126 pounds), Porter Lozenski (150) and Grayden Timm (175) each finished in the runner-up position, while Bailey Gillen (106), Paxton Ewing (113) and Esten Foss (120) claimed third in their respective divisions.
Those efforts gave Central a commanding presence in the team scores, as the Golden Eagles finished with 243.5 points. The host Lynx were second with 229, while Yankton was a distant third with 149.5.
“The guys are competing hard,” Bowden said. “Now it’s about sharpening that edge. Finding the things we need to focus on on our end to go out and score bonus points.”
Central will head to Yankton Thursday for an Eastern South Dakota Conference dual before taking part in the Harrisburg Invitational next Saturday.
