SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Roncalli seventh grader Abby Andersen moved into the semifinals at flight six singles during the opening day of the State AA Tennis Tournament on Monday.
Andersen, the third-seed in her flight, received a bye and then recorded a straight set win over her opponent in the quarterfinals.
“She’s the third seed, so we came in expecting her to take care of business,” said Roncalli coach Jonah Dignan, “and she did.”
Another highlight for the Cavaliers was the play of fellow seventh grader Sydney Bohle, who overcame a rough first set to record a win in a super-tiebreaker at flight two singles, by a score of 1-6, 6-4, (10-2).
“Sydney Bohle played really well. She beat the Pierre girl that had beat her twice previously,” Dignan said. “She lost that first set big, then rallied and won in a super. She then turned around and played the STM girl that beat her 6-0, 6-0, a couple weeks ago, and played her really well taking some games.”
Gianna Cihak fell in a tight match at flight three singles, falling 10-8 in a super breaker.
“Gianna played so well in her singles and came up just short in the super,” Dignan said. “We had never seen the Vermillion girl play, so we were feeling it out and managed pretty good.”
Roncalli also recorded victories over teams from Spearfish at top flight doubles and at third flight doubles.
Milbank has 89 teams points, one spot ahead of Roncalli with 77.
The tournament wraps up today.
