MITCHELL – Aberdeen Central split a pair of tight tennis duals on Saturday, defeating Brandon Valley 6-3, and losing to Mitchell 6-2.
Central coach John Vogel said both duals could have gone either way.
“We knew both teams were going to be good,” Vogel said.
The Golden Eagles started out with singles against Mitchell on day. They split the top four flights, which featured a pair of super tiebreakers, with each team claiming one.
“We had really good matches 1-4. … It was a bummer we only got one of the tiebreakers,” Vogel said.
Estelle Riggs won her super at flight five singles. She then teamed with Sarah Knie to win another super break at second flight doubles.
Riggs won also both of her matches against Brandon Valley.
“It’s impressive when you go undefeated,” Vogel said.
He noted that Riggs trailed her opponent from Brandon Valley before finishing strong.
“She figured the girl out at the end,” Vogel said, “or maybe she just wore her down.”
Central now has a rare week off before playing multiple times the following week starting by hosting St. Thomas More on Monday, Sept. 15.
“We’ve got lots to work on. We’ll have a really good week of practice,” Vogel said. “It’s weird to have a slow week of matches. We’re going to keep them darn busy and then get busy.”
