Last year on July 31, 2024: Track and field and cross country pioneer Dean Mann (1932-2024) of Sioux Falls has died at age 92. Mann did it all during his lifetime of service to sports. He was a star athlete, coach, official and administrator. His teams won state high school championships that
Mann ran on, coached and administrated. His was a star runner for Sioux Falls Washington and
Augustana.
10 years ago on July 29, 2015: After almost a 30- year run, the All-Star Games in Aberdeen ended as participation and interest has dwindled over the years.
20 years ago on July 31, 2005: Jeremy Wermers, Eric Schoenfelder, Matt Sudbeck and Matt Malloy led Parkston to a 6-1 win over host Groton for the American Legion Baseball State B title. Andrew Wanner and Mitch Locke led Groton.
30 years ago on July 29, 1995: The NFL Hall of Fame game featured two South Dakotans. Miller and Augustana graduate Bryan Schwartz is a rookie linebacker for Jacksonville, and Baltic and SDSU graduate Brad Seely is the special teams coach for Carolina. The Panthers defeated the Jaguars 20-14 on a last-minute goal-line stand.
40 years ago on Aug. 2, 1985: The new Huron College football coach is Gary Radisewitz. Joining him will be eight members from his Anoka-Ramsey (MN) Junior College football team from last fall.
50 years ago on Aug. 2, 1975: Terry Hofer won the Onida Golf Tournament with a score of 68.
