Class A boys’ basketball teams begin their first step on a quest for a trip to the state tournament when region action takes place this week. The initial goal is to be one of 16 teams to make the SoDak 16 round next week.

This year’s Class A state tournament will be in Sioux Falls March 16-18.

Here is a look at three regions in the area:

Region 1A Tuesday and Friday at Summit and Groton

Waubay-Summit is the top seed in Region 1A after moving up to Class A this season. The Mustangs finished fifth at the State B tourney last season. The squad has not lost to a Class A team this season, with three losses coming against quality Class B foes. The Mustangs will attempt to make another deep postseason run.

Groton is the second seed and looks to return to the Class A state tournament after a seventh-place finish last season. The Tigers have the talent to cause issues for other teams in the postseason and will be a difficult opponent to face.

Aberdeen Roncalli is the fifth seed entering region. The Cavaliers have had an up-and-down season, and closed with a demanding late-season schedule that produced a five-game losing streak. Roncalli faces Tiospa Zina in the opening round, a team that Cavaliers defeated by six points during the regular season.

Region 2A at highest seeds

Sioux Valley is the top seed in this loaded region and looking to return to the state tournament after finishing runner-up the past two seasons. Sioux Valley’s two losses have come against the top-two teams in Class A, Dakota Valley and Sioux Falls Christian. The Cossacks have the talent and experience to make another deep postseason run.

Hamlin is the second seed and has what it takes to make the state tournament for the first time since 1993. Hamlin’s three losses have come against Dell Rapids, Sioux Valley, and Sioux Falls Christian. However, the Chargers also have many quality wins.

Clark-Willow Lake is the third seed and has several experienced players who will make the Cyclones a tough out in region play.

Deuel is the fourth seed and finished with 12-8 record against a loaded schedule. The Cardinals feature a senior-heavy team, capable of holding its own in the postseason.

Region 6A Tuesday and Friday at Miller and McLaughlin

Region 6A is up for grabs as the top four teams in the region field are all around .500.

McLaughlin and Miller are the top seeds entering the tournament.

McLaughlin began the season 8-4, but struggled a bit down the stretch. The Mustangs have the talent to get through the region and make a trip to the SoDak 16.

Miller started out the season with a 5-9 record, but has now won six games in a row. The Rustlers certainly have momentum heading into the posteason.
