WEBSTER – It was a big day for the Aberdeen Roncalli girls’ cross country team on Thursday.
The Cavaliers placed four runners among the top six, led by race winner Addison Cassaday, to win the Northeast Conference team championship.
“Our boys and girls have been training consistently for weeks and it paid off today,” said Roncalli coach Casey Steele. “Addison ran such a smart race today. Trailing at the first mile, she pushed ahead during mile two, taking the lead separating herself from the rest of the field. Addi set the tone for the rest of our girls.”
Roncalli’s Taylor McComsey, Hazel Kannegieter, and Hannah Eskro finished fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
“We had just a 67-second gap from our first four girls,” Steele said.
Milbank’s Jeter Scoular won the boys’ race with Sisseton’s Ryder Graff in second.
Deuel grabbed the next four spots to win the boys’ team title.
Roncalli was led by seventh-grader Ben Weigel, who finished in eighth.
“Our boys were very competitive today, finishing just four points out of third place,” Steele said. “Ben continues his incredible competitive effort against older, more seasoned runners. Again, another top 10 performance for him.”
The same teams will be back on the same course on Wednesday to compete in the Region 1A meet. This year’s state meet will take place Saturday, Oct. 24 at Hart Ranch in Rapid City.
