Aberdeen Central made up for a shaky start with a solid finish at Brownell Activities Complex Saturday morning.

The Golden Eagles gave up a goal in the first two minutes, and then nothing else after that in a 2-1 non-conference girls’ soccer victory over Tea Area to improve to 7-0 on the season.

“We tried to be in the zone and we got a little too lax there,” said Central coach Kendra Hanley of the start of the game. “We’re all about learning from mistakes and we talked about that at halftime. We’re one that we need to prove ourselves every single game. We can’t come in like that.”

Central got things squared away and leveled the score when Brianna Fischer took a feed off a corner kick to knot the score at 1-1.

“It definitely told us to wake up a little bit,” said Central’s Keyana Stillman of Tea’s opening score. “We can’t give up an early goal like that and just settle in. We always have to be intense and we just didn’t do that right away, but we got back on our feet.”

It was just a matter of time before the Golden Eagles got its offense going, and Central took the lead in the second half on a free key from Espynn Kuhfeld from 20 yards out in the 47th minute.

“The set piece that we had on the 20 right here was beautiful. It was just a nice upper 90 shot,” Hanley said. “I had a gut feeling with it. She had that gut feeling with it, and when you have it, you have to take it and it was beautiful. And then that one-ball layoff from Jaxi (Lozenski) across the field over to Espynn for the shot was also a brilliant look.”

Lozenski continues to be a driving force for the Golden Eagles, pressuring opposing defenses with nifty ball handling and setting up opponents for high-percentage shots.

“Jaxi just knows how to get around everybody,” said Central’s McKenna Jorgensen, “and if you set a through ball, Jaxi or Brianna will always get it, and Keyana just knows how to work the midfield.”

As a result, Central features a potent offense with a variety of scoring options, and those were on display on set pieces against the Titans.

“They’re really good at that. We’ve been working on that a lot and they execute it so well,” Stillman said. “It’s cool to see because sometimes we miss those balls, but this year I feel like we’re nailing them.”

The Golden Eagles are doing their best to try to take advantage of their ballhandling and team speed to create numerous scoring opportunities.

“It helps because Jaxi can just dribble, dribble, dribble and Brianna’s such a good finisher,” Stillman said, “and we have Espynn and Kenley (Stucke) and everybody back there ready for the ball if it bounces to them, and they’re great at finishing.”

Jorgensen now finds herself as a part of that attack after switching positions from last season.

“I’m playing wingback now instead of outside back,” Jorgensen said “so I’m playing more of an attacking position than defensive.”

Jorgensen is enjoying her new role on the squad, being a part of a team that has produced at least six goals in four different games so far this season.

“I like it more, because I feel that with the three back then we have more opportunities to move the ball forward,” Jorgensen said, “and it’s more an attacking year instead of trying to keep the ball defensive.”

The game was played in hot and windy conditions, but Central was able to navigate the elements.

“The girls did a great job of having each other’s back, especially with the heat and talking each other through it, but most importantly they were taking one for each other,” Hanley said. “When someone got super tired and a sub wasn’t coming in quick enough, they were able to cover for each other and fill and move.”

A big part of that is the variety of skill sets that the Golden Eagles have on the roster this season.

“Again we talked about that in the game of soccer,” Hanley said. “We’re such a versatile team that girls are able to do that, and it’s super helpful to keep your team engaged going in the right direction.”

The Golden Eagles have been up to the challenge every time they have stepped on the pitch so far this season. Stillman noted that all the players are invested and giving maximum effort.

“I really just think that everybody wants it. A bunch of the younger girls have really put the work in at practice and they’ve filled really big shoes and they’ve done a great job,” Stillman said. “They hustle for every ball and they’re willing to do what it takes and that’s good to see.”

Central will host Harrisburg is a marquee matchup on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Tigers are also undefeated at 8-0 so far this season.

“We’re looking forward to that game,” Hanley said. “I’m hoping that we learned our lesson in this game, that we can’t come in complacent and we have to be ready to rock and roll from the get go. We’re really excited for that game.”
