Less than 24 hours after pulling out a five-set victory, and playing its third match in four days, Aberdeen Central showed no signs of fatigue on Friday evening.

The Golden Eagles were in control on the way to a 25-9, 25-20, 25-20 non-conference volleyball win over Rapid City Central at Golden Eagles Arena.

From the opening serve, Aberdeen Central set the tone with aggressive serving and an offense that kept the Cobblers off track.

Golden Eagles coach Jackie Bindenagel credited the team’s serving and balanced offensive attack for helping to fuel the victory.

“I thought we served really well. We really just try to run a fast offense to get some free balls back our way,” Bindenagel said. “We had a pretty balanced scoring attack tonight. Each outside had a good number of kills and our middles got going, and we did a nice job on the right side.”

Aberdeen Central’s ability to stay aggressive after mistakes also played a major role in the victory. The Eagles consistently took advantage of opportunities and continued to put pressure on the Cobblers.

“Any time we get an error in our favor we just want to come back and be aggressive, and I thought our kids did that very well tonight,” Bindenagel said.

Senior outside hitter Lauryn Burckhard helped lead the Eagles’ attack, finishing with 10 kills, four aces, and two block assists. Her serving provided an early spark, while her offensive production helped keep the Eagles in front.

Burckhard said the team’s energy and ability to play together were important in the straight-set victory.

“We played as a team, try to keep our energy high, and not match their level of play tonight,” Burckhard said. “Aces brought energy to the court and making those smart plays even if they aren’t super big swings, they keep the team going.”

That energy was particularly crucial for the Eagles, who were playing their third match in just four days. Despite the demanding stretch and fatigued bodies, Aberdeen Central continued to play with intensity throughout the match.

Burckhard also pointed to the team’s middle hitters as another source of energy throughout the match.

“I love when our middles get a kill, so anytime our middles get a kill it gets us going,” Burckhard said.

The Eagles’ balanced attack allowed them to turn back the Cobblers, who battled back in the second and third sets.

Aberdeen Central continued to serve aggressively, racking up a dozen aces in all, and finding openings in the Rapid City Central defense and made the plays necessary to close out both sets by the same 25-20 score.

Kamdyn Borge contributed nine kills to the Aberdeen Central total, while Kalli Huff added four aces.

The Golden Eagles, 2-1 on the season, play at Spearfish on Thursday.
