Huron’s Cole Searing won the Tri-State Late Model feature Friday night at Brown County Speedway.

The series event brought drivers in drivers from as far away as Georgia to the local oval.

Cody Overton of Thomson, Ga., finished eight in the Late Model feature. The 28-year-old driver is friends with Watertown driver Scott Ward and drove his car during the program.

“Scott’s always been a good buddy. We’ve always talked here and there. Just always kept in contact,” Overton said. “He was like you want to just come up here and race this weekend? I didn’t have anything really to race at home. There wasn’t much going on.”

Overton, who has raced as close as Huron in the past, had never competed at Brown County Speedway before.

Following his heat race, Overton talked about the competition on hand.

“There’s a lot of good ones,” Overton said. “Anybody here can win.”

There was also a strong contingent of drivers in attendance from Nebraska, including Cory Dumpert from Newman Grove, Neb.

He entered the weekend second in points in the Tri-State Late Model Series.

Dumpert won his heat race during his first experience at the local track.

“It’s really fast. It’s really small,” Dumpert said. “I don’t race on stuff this small, at all.”

He said he is used to bigger tracks, but liked the high-banked oval.

“This thing is a perfect circle it feels like,” Dumpert said.

Dumpert plans on following the entire series and knows the competition is stiff.

“That’s why I’m so nervous,” Dumpert said following his heat race. “There’s a lot of big hitters up here and I don’t know any of them.”

Jake Wranek of Sioux Falls won the Midwest Modified feature, Jayden Bogh of Huron won the Street Stock main, and Preston Martin of Lincoln, N.D., took the Legends feature.

Racing continues at 7 p.m. Friday.
