A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of June 21-27, 2026:

Last year on June 24, 2025: Arlin Likness and Tom McGough were inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in Rapid City. Likness is a Britton and Northern State graduate who won seven football state titles at Hamlin and Yankton. His teams went 261-101 and were state runners-up three times. A Stanley County and NSU graduate, McGough of Miller has been coaching track and cross country for more than 50 years. His teams have won 70 conference, 46 region and two state championships.

10 years ago on June 25, 2016: USD softball player Yvon Minogue has been named to the Mexican National Team as Team Mexico will compete in the World Cup and World Championships this summer. She is one of the top hitters in Coyote history.

20 years ago on June 25, 2006: Mitchell twin sisters Jenna and Jeana Hoffman are transferring to USD to play basketball after two seasons at Division I Texas State.

30 years ago on June 22, 1996: A 11-year-old Redfield girl, Heidi Muellenberg, made the cover of the Argus Leader sports section. She was long jumping at the state AAU track and field meet in Flandreau.

40 years ago on June 27, 1986: Yankton football coach Max Hawk was named the national high school coach of the year in Florida. He is the first South Dakota coach to win the award. His 29-year coaching record is 213-53-2. He was a former standout player for Northern State.

50 years ago on June 21, 1976: Five of USD’s eight-man varsity tennis team from this past spring were Vermillion High School graduates: Jon Knutson, Loren Smith, Scott Hackler, Byron Miller and Rich Raab. Miller played No. 1 singles for the Coyotes and Knutson and Hackler play No. 1 doubles.
