Trying to keep up

As photography equipment improves, I continue to get older and slower. Cameras like the one I use can capture upwards of 20 frames of action a second. That is wonderful when it comes to catching the winning moment. But there is usually only room for one winning moment. So what to do with the other 19 frames?

As a diehard get all you paid for and then some guy, I feel it is my obligation to not just capture the moment for today, but also capture other moments that can go in the archives and be used later.

I grew up in a home and worked at several places where things had to be cost-justified. Which extended to the idea of if you went out of town you could not just come back with one photo or one story.

Which brings me back to the problem I have, most often in track and field season. Trying to keep up with all the images I take. At recent track meets I came home with 1,000 to 2,000 images from each meet. Granted I do not keep all of them and not all are useable. But I still have to sort through them, which itself is time consuming.

Do not get me wrong, I love to hear the camera go clickity, clickity, clickity. But all those images add up and there is not always time enough in one day to get to all of them. Which is why it has taken nearly a week to get caught up on the track meets of last week.

While I know my boss does not put any pressure on me and it is OK to take my time to get them all done, especially since most are only for the archives and will be used with later stories, I still feel that self-imposed deadline pressure to get them done.

I hope this little explanation helps you the reader to understand why there is a near-week old gallery on the website today. And it should also answer the question I and hundreds of photographers hear frequently while on assignment — Did you get any good photos?
