Wall used a big finish to record the team’s best finish in a state tournament Saturday night at Wachs Arena.
The Eagles overcame an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to earn a hard-fought 58-55 win over Lyman in the third-place game of the State B Boys’ Basketball Tournament.
“Third place is one win away from what we wanted,” said Wall coach Ryan Kjerstad. “Obviously, it’d be nice to play in the late session, but to be here and get the best season in the history of the school is a really good way for these boys to go out.”
Trailing 49-41, the Eagles closed out the game on a 17-6 surge to secure the victory.
Emmet Dinger’s fourth 3-pointer of the game gave Wall a 54-53 lead with less than three minutes remaining.
Dinger finished with 16 points in the contest.
“It felt good,” Dinger said. “I was coming off a good game (Friday) and it just transferred over to today and I continued to shoot good.”
Dinger hit back-to-back 3’s to give Wall a 10-4 lead in the opening quarter.
The Eagles extended their lead to 14-6, before Lyman scored six unanswered points to close the quarter, five from Dawsen Volmer to cut the deficit to 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.

“When I go on the court, I’m just trying to do whatever I can to help my team,” Volmer said. “I just take pride in doing what it takes to help give my team a chance to win.”
Wall opened the second quarter on a 14-4 run, half the points coming from Teelan Kjerstad. However, Lyman erased most of a 12-point deficit by scoring nine unanswered points, five coming from MJ Diehm and four from Volmer.
The Eagles then closed out the half with five straight points, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Trevor Schulz that gave Wall a 33-27 halftime lead.
Lyman opened the third quarter with a quick 6-0 run to tie the score, but Dinger answered with a 3-pointer. Diehm then hit two 3-pointers to give the Raiders their first lead since the first quarter, when they led 2-0.
That set the stage for the fourth quarter when Wall was eventually able to overtake the Raiders at the finish. Lyman missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.
“It was a really fun game for both teams,” said Lyman coach Cooper Garnos. “We’re rivals, so that always adds to it. I think there are a lot of fun things that happen when the teams are getting up and down the floor.”
Diehm finished with 22 points and Volmer added 20 for the Raiders, who took fourth place after entering the tournament as the eighth seed.
“Coming in we were eight and I think there were people doubting us,” Volmer said. “Even though the second half of the tournament didn’t go our way, I’m still proud of our guys and excited for next year.”

Teelan Kjerstad also added 16 points to the Wall total. The Eagles capped their season with a 20-5 record.
When asked what he would remember about his team this year, Dinger replied, “Resiliency and the compassion we had for each other and just the brotherhood we created over the years.”
