RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Roncalli picked up its first dual tennis victory, before being held off the scoreboard by two other squads during the West River Invitational on Friday.

The Cavaliers ended up edging Rapid City Central 5-4 to start the day. Roncalli won four of six singles matches after falling in two of the three doubles on Thursday night.

“We actually came out of the gate a little slow against Central, but were able to handle business,” said Roncalli coach Jonah Dignan. “We played way better as the day progressed.”

Linus Johnson and Lincoln Hundstad both won tight matches to help secure the dual win over the Cobblers. Johnson grabbed a tiebreaker win at third flight, while Hundstad edged his foe 10-8 at fourth flight.

Roncalli then fell 9-0 to both Rapid City Christian and St. Thomas More.

“Christian and STM are both strong squads and we have nothing to hang our head about,” Dignan said. “Our one doubles were down 5-0 against STM and won six straight, and then lost in a tiebreak.”

Dignan pointed out the play of Ezra Feickert at top flight singles

“Ezra played some real quality opponents today and played tough points,” Dignan said. “It felt like almost every game was a deuce game or close.”

Roncalli concludes the three-day event by taking on Spearfish this morning.

“We played a lot of matches for this early in the season and it showed in our conditioning,” Dignan said, “but we’ll attack that in practice and be ready next time around.”
