Most of the higher-seeded Class B boys’ basketball teams made it through regional competition last week, some by the slimmest of margins.
One final hurdle awaits during SoDak 16 competition on Tuesday. A trip to next week’s state tournament at Wachs Arena awaits each of the winners.
Here is a look at each of the regions involving area teams:
14 Ipswich (14-8) vs. 3 De Smet (18-4), 5:30 p.m. at Huron
Both of these squads survived regional semifinal contests, each winning by two points.
De Smet, which has been among the top-rated teams all season, has won seven games in a row. Ipswich, which went through a five-game losing streak during the regular season, has won six of its last seven games.
The Bulldogs of De Smet had their string of qualifying for six consecutive state tournaments snapped last season, losing to eventual state champion Castlewood in overtime in the region.
Ipswich, which also lost to Castlewood in the SoDak 16 last year, will be looking for its first trip to the state tourney since 2000.
13 Sioux Falls Lutheran (16-6) vs. 4 Aberdeen Christian (19-3), 6 p.m. at Watertown
This will be the first ever meeting between these two schools in any sport.
Aberdeen Christian will be looking for its sixth trip to the state tournament in the past seven years. The Knights have been rated among the top 10 teams all season.

Sioux Falls Lutheran, which just got started a few years ago, has been steadily building its program. The Eagles, who played five Class A schools this year, held their own against a couple of teams that were rated in Class B.
The two teams have one common foe. Aberdeen Christian defeated Waubay-Summit, while SFL lost to the Mustangs in a game where it led by double-digits at the half.
12 Timber Lake (15-7) vs. 5 Castlewood (19-3), 5:30 p.m. at Miller
Castlewood has been a staple at the state tournament in recent years. The Warriors have participated in the past four state tourneys, winning the state title last year after a third-place finish the year before.
Timber Lake will be in search of its first state tournament appearance since 2019, when the Panthers played in the state tourney in back-to-back years.
Castlewood, which was the top-rated team in the final poll of the season, played a schedule that included nine Class A teams. The Warriors, who won by two points in last week’s region semifinal, went 6-3 in those games.
The Panthers own wins over a pair of SoDak 16 teams this season are a dangerous postseason foe.
10 Lyman (16-6) vs. 7 Leola-Frederick (17-5), 7 p.m. at Huron
This has the making of an interesting battle that could go down to the wire.
Both teams have similar records and some recent state tournament experience, Lyman playing in last year’s event and Leola-Frederick competing in the tourney two years ago.

Of Lyman’s six setbacks, four came to teams still competing in the SoDak 16, and another to a top-five rated team. The Titans overcame injuries to win 11 games in a row at one stage this season. Leola-Frederick made a whopping 29-of-30 free throws in its region semifinal victory.
Both own wins over Jones County this season, Lyman defeating the Coyotes twice.
9 Dupree (18-4) vs. 8 Sully Buttes (17-5), 7 p.m. at Gettysburg
As is the case in most 8 vs. 9 seeded matchups, this could be one of the closest of all the SoDak 16 contests.
Sully Buttes will be looking to qualify for its first state tournament since 2020, when the Chargers qualified four straight years, winning the state championship in 2018. Dupree hasn’t been to the state tournament since finishing third in 2013, the second of back-to-back trips for the Tigers.

Sully Buttes faced six Class A teams this year, going 4-2 against those squads. The Chargers have won eight of their last nine games.
Dupree enters the contest on a 13-game winning streak. The Tigers also played six Class A teams, going 3-3 against those squads.
The two have played three common opponents. Both defeated Jones County and Gettysburg. Dupree defeated Timber Lake twice, while Sully Buttes lost to the Panthers.
