Amdahl wins boys’ Luitjens Coach of Influence Award

Waubay-Summit coach Mark Amdahl is the recipient of this year’s boys’ Larry Luitjens Coach of Influence Award. Amdahl, the current head boys’ basketball coach for the Mustangs, has a career record of 380-138 with nine state tournament appearances and three state championships.

He has coached for 22 years in the Waubay and Summit communities.

“Anytime your named is associated with Larry Luitjens it is an honor,” Amdahl said. “He set the standard of what coaching is all about. He is a South Dakota legend and all coaches should aspire to be like him.”

Amdahl recognized those in his life who have helped to make the award possible.

“I share this award with my family, especially my wife Lisa. She is my biggest supporter through it all,” Amdahl said. “I also share it with my players, past and present, along with our communities. I am thankful for the opportunity to coach amazing kids.”

Amdahl will receive his award at this week’s State B Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Wachs Arena.

Brandon Kandolin of St. Thomas More is the recipient of the girls’ Coach of Influence Award. He has a career record of 455-125 in 26 years of coaching with seven state championships. He received his award at the State AA girls’ basketball tournament this past weekend.
