PIERRE – The Aberdeen Cougars overcame a three-goal deficit, survived a last-second goal in regulation and captured a 6-5 overtime boys’ hockey win over Oahe on Saturday night.

Austin Schmit scored the game-winner with 7:14 left in OT on a feed from Carter Vilhauer.

“It was a great win,” said Aberdeen coach Dana Myhre. “Really proud of the guys for not giving up.”

The Cougars who got a first-period goal from Vilhauer, trailed 4-1 in the second period before scoring four unanswered goals to take the lead in the third period.

Jaxon Danielson and Trayke Roerich each scored twice during the surge. Roehrich’s goal with 43 seconds remaining appeared to be the game-winner, however Oahe’s Dylan Dodson (who scored four goals) produced the game-tying goal with three seconds left to force overtime.

Myhre was proud of his team’s effort in the come-from-behind victory.

“We got into penalty trouble in the first period, but we got that corrected and got them to settle down a bit and play our game,” Myhre said. “Just kept fighting and got a few bounces to go our way.”

The Cougars are back in action today with a game at Huron.
