Central wrestlers win four duals at Harrisburg tourney

HARRISBURG – It was a big day for the Aberdeen Central boys’ wrestling team on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles won all four of their duals, and had three individuals reach milestone victories in the process.

Central defeated Fulda-Murray County Central, Minn. 55-12, and West Central 45-30, and pulled out two tight decisions, 33-29 over Minneota, Minn., and 41-36 over Jackson County Central, Minn. 41-36.

“That was really quality competition. It was a good day. It was a hard-fought day,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “We had to go out and earn those victories and this team has really come together. It started when we went to Yankton and we beat Brandon Valley and Yankton (on Thursday), and then it just rolled through this weekend with four really good wins, quality wins.”

A pair of the duals came down to just a match or two.

“It was a big team effort. We had some guys step up in duals,” Bowden said. “Everyone fought their tail off, trying to prevent bonus points here and there. That’s dual wrestling.”

Five Golden Eagles went undefeated on the day: Esten Foss at 120 pounds, Will Allen at 138, Ridley Waldo at 157, Grayden Timm at 175, and Owen Ward at 190.

Porter Lozenski and Ward each picked up their 100th career win, while Waldo won his 150th career match.

Central continues to juggle its lineup around and receive big contributions from individuals who may not be at their normal weight.

Bowden is hoping to get everybody back in the lineup for the stretch run.

“That’s the goal. We’re kind of in the part right now where January is a tough month. Usually for injury, usually for sickness,” Bowden said. “We’re just hoping that we can get on the better side of this thing before the postseason and really make a run at it.”

Central is in Pierre next Saturday for the East-West Dual Tournament.
