A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 11-18, 2025:
Last year on Oct. 11, 2024: The Aberdeen Wings (6-0-0) defeated the North Iowa Bulls 2-1, earning coach Scott Langer his 700th win as a North America Hockey League head coach. He is the winningst coach in NAHL history with a 700-287-92 record.
10 years ago on Oct. 17, 2015: USD stunned No. 2 NDSU 24-21 on Miles Bergner’s 33-yard field as time expired. It was USD’s first win over the Bison since 2002 and the Coyotes first win over NDSU in Fargo since 1978.
20 years ago on Oct. 12, 2005: After 31 seasons and five boys’ basketball state titles at Custer, Larry Luitjens is back on the bench. He missed last season for health reasons. Luitjens also won two state titles at De Smet. His Custer team won its opener, 52-30 over Hot Springs on Dec. 9, in Luitjens’ first game back.
30 years ago on Oct. 14, 1995: The Minnesota Timberwolves defeated Milwaukee 106-98 in an NBA exhibition game at the Barnett Cener. Christian Laettner led the Wolves with 20 points while 19-year-old teammate and NBA rookie Kevin Garnett added 13 points. Vin Baker and Glenn Robinson combined for 32 for the Bucks. The teams had a combined 80 fouls and 105 free throws.
40 years ago on Oct. 15, 1985: Sioux Falls Lincoln senior Tonya Breitag finished her four-year high school tennis career with a perfect record. She won the No. 1 state singles and doubles titles all four years. Breitag and Alex Rost (SFL senior who won No. 2 singles) won the doubles title and led the Patriots to their second straight team title.
50 years ago on Oct. 18, 1975: Before a Hobo Day record crowd of 15,866, SDSU nipped USD 24-22 on Dan DeLaHunt’s 25-yard field goal with 14 seconds left. It ended the Coyotes five-year win streak over their rivals.
