GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Aberdeen Central’s Carson Urlacher was near the top with some of the premier runners in the Upper Midwest on Saturday during the Border Battle cross country event.
Urlacher finished fourth in a field of 200 runners in his race.
“Carson ran just a really, really solid race again,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “It’s one of those situations you get what you deserve. He’s worked, really, really hard to get to this point.”
Central’s Esten Foss was 22nd, Max Nelson was 38th, and Tate DeVries was 47th.
Murley would like to see his runners get out a bit quicker in the future.
“We still need to do a little bit better job and getting up early, bigger races especially you have to do that,” Murley said. “It will be a little easier at the ESD meet, to kind of find guys that you’re going to race early. Here you don’t really know who you’re racing until you kind of get into it a little bit.”
The regular season is quickly coming to a close. Murley is looking forward to seeing what lies ahead for the Golden Eagles.
“I think this is just a team that’s really starting to progress,” Murley said. “I’m excited to see what the championship ending of this turns out to be.”
The Central girls, who ran without top runner Allie Novstrup, out with an illness, were led by Evie Novstrup in 88th. Grace Preszler followed at 106, and Allison Brenner came in 111th.

“As a team it was nice to see some new teams and get another week of racing in on a course we haven’t had much experience with,” said Central girls’ coach Eric Pedersen. “As far as the rest of the group, Evie did a nice job of working her way up in the middle of the race and gaining every position she could get.”
Pedersen would also like to see the girls get out a bit quicker at the start of races.
“I thought as a group the girls could have gotten themselves out quicker as we seemed a bit further back than where we could have been,” Pedersen said. “Grace continues to build on a solid first season with the varsity group, which is cool to see her get some more confidence and race hard. She’s learning a lot each week.”
Central will now start gearing up for the ESD Meet on Oct. 11.
