Roncalli splits duals with Huron and Madison

HURON – Aberdeen Roncalli continued its strong week of tennis with another dual victory and an improved result against Madison on Thursday. Two days after recording their first win of the season, the Cavaliers defeated Huron 6-3, and fell to Madison 7-2.

“We played our best tennis today, everyone from top to bottom,” said Roncalli coach Jonah Dignan. “We were able to flip two matches from when we played Huron.”

The Cavaliers won four of the six singles, and two of the three doubles.

Dignan pointed out the play of Keira Rivett at top flight singles, and Gianna Cihak at flight three singles.

“Keira was down in her match and was able to come back and really take control of that one,” Dignan said. “Gianna was down at almost every changeover and towards the end of the match found another gear and put her girl away.”

Dignan also noted the performance of Cihak and Molleigh Hofer at flight two doubles.

“Our flight two doubles played really well against Huron,” Dignan said. “They set themselves up to finish the points at the net. There’s not much more I could ask for from them.”

The wind then picked up when Roncalli faced Madison, and despite losing by five, the Cavaliers held their own.

“The first time we played them I believe we lost 8-1. This time we lost 7-2 and we were in a lot more of those matches,” Dignan said. “Especially at flight one and two singles. We didn’t a game at those flights last time and today we got 3 and 4 games, respectively.”

Cihak pulled out a 9-7 tiebreaker victory in singles, and Abby Andersen defeated her opponent at flight six singles.

“Abby Andersen won both her singles and played really well,” Dignan said. “She’s a grinder. She just plays out really long points and it’s been working for her this season.”

No match on the day was closer than Cihak’s tie-breaking victory.

“Gianna was in a really back and forth with her girl from Madison,” Dignan said, “and able to get a few breaks in the tiebreaker and was able to finish it off.”

Roncalli travels to Pierre on Tuesday to face Rapid City Central and Pierre.
