A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Sept. 21-27, 2025:

Last year on Sept. 22, 2024: Britton-Hecla and SDSU graduate Dallas Goedert had a career day in leading his Philadelphia Eagles past the New Orleans Saints 15-12. Goedert, one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL, caught 10 passes for 170 yards. He set up the game-winning touchdown with his 61-yard catch to the New Orleans’ 4-yard line with a minute to play.

10 years ago on Sept. 25, 2015: The Northern State volleyball team upset then-No. 1 Minnesota-Duluth 25-10, 25-21 and 25-22 to improve to 12-0. Top performers for the Wolves included Kelsey Chambers, Tori Biach, Cari McGarvie, Drew Smith and Renee Hoffman.

20 years ago on Sept. 23, 2005: Rapid City bowler Derek Patton rolled 26 straight strikes, his first career 300 game and a career-high series of 778 in the Classy Trio League at Meadowood Lanes in Rapid City. He rolled a 192 in his first game, ending with four strikes, then rolled 12 strikes for his 300 and then 10 strikes in a row for a third game of 286.

30 years ago on Sept. 23, 1995: Redfield native Tracy Hellman won the Ron Renko Invitational men’s cross country meet in Iowa, and led the University of Sioux Falls men’s team to the title as well.

40 years ago on Sept. 21, 1985: SDSU defeated visiting Nebraska-Omaha 45-28 in the North Central Conference football opener. Dan Sonnek had only nine yards rushing, but the Jackrabbit tailback would go on to rush for 1,340 yards in the conference season, a NCC record. With games of 266 yards rushing (vs. Augustana) and 268 (vs. Northern Colorado), Sonnek ended the year as the top rusher in the NCAA DII nation with 138 yards per game.

50 years ago on Sept. 27, 1975: The USD men’s cross country team defeated SDSU in a dual for the first time in school history. It ended the Jacks’ 18-year winning streak against the Coyotes. USD coach Jim Kampen’s Coyotes won 28-29. SDSU’s Mike Bills won the five-mile race in 25 minutes, 18 seconds, while USD freshman Dan O’Brien finished second, three seconds behind Bills. USD also got third (Charlie Cvrk) and fourth (Pat Cain).
