A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Sept. 14-20, 2025:

Last year on Sept. 14, 2024: Webster native Ronette Costain earned her 500 th career volleyball coaching win. The victory also extended the winning streak of Costain’s Harrisburg Tigers to 52 straight matches. Costain has been Harrisburg’s coach for almost 30 seasons and the Tigers are the two-time defending State AA champs.

10 years ago on Sept. 14, 2015: Thomas Madut of Mitchell won the Sioux Falls Marathon in 2 hours, 38 minutes.

20 years ago on Sept. 16, 2005: A mountain lion interrupted a high school boys’ golf dual between Lead-Deadwood and Sturgis at the Lead Country Club. The lion wandered onto the ninth hole, but was spooked by human activity and ran back into the trees from which it came.

30 years ago on Sept. 16, 1995: Officiating the high school football game in Hartford was Dale Weber (Salem) and his sons Ron (Armour), Rick (Flandreau) and Rod (Mitchell). Lake Benton (MN) defeated Geddes-Dakota Christian 22-6. A full- family football crew was believed to be a South
Dakota-first.

40 years ago on Sept. 14, 1985: Scott Jones, Chul Schwanke and Tony Higgins each ran for more than 100 yards as USD took down SDSU 33-18. Three days later, the Coyotes were ranked No. 1 in the NCAA DII Poll for the first time in program history.

50 years ago on Sept. 20, 1975: Webster defeated Groton 2-0 on a team safety in the fourth quarter. Randy Bury and Randy Hough led the Bearcats’ defense.
