A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 13-19 2025:

Last year on July 18, 2024: The 35th annual Burke Stampede Rodeo kicked off with a unique event. More than 300 boys and girls of all ages from a handful of states competed for 57 titles in “Rumble at the Rodeo,” an outside AAU wrestling tourney at the Burke rodeo grounds.

10 years ago on July 13, 2015: Patty Coddington of Sioux Falls won her fourth straight SDGA Women’s Senior Championship in a playoff over Jackie Witlock of Aberdeen at Moccasin Creek Country Club.

20 years ago on July 15, 2005: The new Swisher Field complex by the new high school in Aberdeen may not be ready to host the South Dakota High School All-Star football game on July 28. However, the field was ready and the South All-Star team defeated the North 24-16 on the field’s first game. Coach Tom Culver of Avon’s South team was led by Jordan Paula (80-yard touchdown run) of Brookings and Derek Ashley (44-yard TD run). North coach Joel Hybertson of Rapid City Stevens has now coached in two
historic games as he coached in the first game at a revamped Howard Wood Field. The Sioux Falls field got turf and RC Stevens played SF Roosevelt in the first game there on Aug. 29, 2003.

30 years ago on July 19, 1995: Watertown native and former Augustana star quarterback Heath Rylance is healthy and is back in the CFL. The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed him to their practice squad.

40 years ago on July 18, 1985: Sioux Falls native and Texas Christian University standout Kris Tschetter has been dominating the women’s golf scene in South Dakota. She won the women’s state amateur tourney by 17 strokes with a 54-hole total of 213 at the Watertown Country Club. On the final day, she shot a course record 69.

50 years ago on July 15, 1975: Three-time Webster wrestling state champion John Schiley plans to attend Huron College. Schiley went 98-7 for the Bearcats.
